Why did all three of the great independent empires to have existed in India (Mughal, Gupta and Maurya) fail to conquer the southern tip of the subcontinent?

All three did conquer the extreme south of the Continent, and quite easily. They simply didn't choose to rule these territories directly on account of the sheer distance of these regions from their respective Imperial Heartlands.
